Case Studies
One of the world’s largest suppliers of eye care products globally develop, manufacture and market a highly comprehensive product portfolio
The supplier is one of the best-known and most respected healthcare brands in the world, offering a wide range of the finest eye health products including contact lenses and lens care products, pharmaceuticals, intraocular lenses and other eye surgery products. The supplier markets three broad categories of products: Vision Care, Pharmaceuticals and Surgery Instruments.
The supplier has a complex automated data exchange system for exchanging information between different operational systems such as manufacturing and order fulfillment, as well as their vendors and distributors via incoming orders, outgoing shipment notifications, etc. The supplier operates in an industry that is heavily regulated and has strict SLAs that were previously missed on a regular basis. This was mainly due to an outdated system that was poorly maintained, albeit functional. The technology it was based on was being retired and the supplier was no longer going to support it. This meant the crux of all of their operations – the ability to receive and fulfill orders, to manufacture and deliver products – was at high risk if anything went wrong.
Additional challenges included adapting to current needs such as integration with cloud-based applications and ingestion of a multitude of different data formats.
Eccella partnered with Informatica to deliver a B2B Data Exchange solution to replace the supplier’s legacy system. Eccella designed a system that allowed seamless interchange of data between systems in real time. The system also enabled comprehensive tracking of every transaction throughout its lifecycle so that no item was lost, and any failure in the system would be caught and handled. The design facilitated detailed logging, notification and handling of each exception. New vendors/customers could be easily brought on without requiring complete recode or regression testing. The system was able to store and maintain important parameters and information so that these could be updated with ease and without harmful impact. It performed faster and more reliably than the legacy system.
Eccella flushed out and processed all requirements to rebuild an EDI, EDIFACT and custom-formats processing hub. The hub interfaces with the internal systems and external partners, translating the data to a format and structure that each system natively supports. This essentially created a centralized self-service managing and monitoring tool for business users. In addition, the new platform relies on information obtained from Salesforce.com, allowing the supplier sale-to-delivery fulfillment in real time, and tracking of the entire transaction lifecycle.
